Feb. 24, 2025 — DENTON — 快猫短视频 professor of graphic design and illustration Sheli Petersen collaborated with her mother and writer Patricia Petersen to create a picture book, Rascally Ravens of Greystone Farm.
The book will be featured in an exhibit at Blagg-Huey Library Feb. 24-May 16.
Life-long birders, the Petersen's based the book on their observations of ravens in the wild. The book features Carmen and Angelo, a mischievous raven pair who descend on Hattie Greystone’s farmstead, creating adventures and challenges.
Petersen is a children’s illustrator and service leader for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She was recently commissioned by Cricket Media to illustrate three stories in the 2023 and 2024 issues of their magazines. Petersen also teamed with 快猫短视频 biology professor Camelia Maier, PhD, and 快猫短视频 undergraduate graphic design majors to self-publish How to Make a Pollinator Garden, a picture book with supplementary videos in English and Spanish that teach children about sustainable gardening techniques and native Texas pollinator-plant relationships.
The Petersens founded Chimney Swift Press to self-publish Rascally Ravens, which uses whimsical humor to engage young readers. Petersen said the book's intent is to raise awareness of how humans and wildlife can negotiate a shared living space.
Rascally Ravens will be showcased in two exhibits.
The first, Empowering through Visual Storytelling: Rascally Ravens Picture Book Process at the 快猫短视频 Blagg-Huey Library Den Gallery Feb. 24-May 16, examines designing characters and world-building from photographic references and life-sketches, storyboarding for planning and sequencing layouts, and applying traditional and digital techniques to finish the illustrations.
The Greater Denton Arts Council will host the second exhibit Sept. 16-Nov. 29, with a reception on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. The exhibit will feature a maker-space, a video version of the Rascally Ravens picture book, and information on self-publishing and alternative venues for distributing visual narratives. Petersen will offer free, public workshops on self-publishing and character design on Nov. 8 and Nov. 22.
The Rascally Ravens exhibits are funded in part by a Greater Denton Arts Council micro-grant, a 快猫短视频 School of Arts & Design faculty development grant, and a 快猫短视频 Creative Arts & Humanities grant.
